On one in every six prescriptions written each year in the UK. They work by either killing bacteria or by halting their multiplication until the body's natural defences overcome the infection. There is a problem of increasing anti-biotic resistance and also the harm done to the body's own systems including 'healthy bacteria' by over reliance on prescriptions - but these are too complex issues to debate in detail here.
